摘要

U.S. defense spending in Fiscal 2005 exceeded $500 billion, more than seven times that of its closest competitor. Trailing in a distant second was China, followed by Russia, France and Japan rounding out the top five big spenders. Militaries are investing in fewer new programs as their Cold War fleets age, and maintenance, repair and overhaul has emerged as a lucrative venture. Another growing marketplace is information technology. Corporations look toward monopolizing on existing assets— by linking sensors and computers already fielded—instead of simply investing in new platforms. IT is also seen as key for allied nations to improve their connectivity on the battlefield. Although those efforts don't fall into the traditional programmatic bailiwick, standardized communications and platform interoperability are areas that defense firms must master to stay in the game.
