Losses in 2006 for the global air transport industry could equal this year's deep pool of red ink, warn industry officials. But such financial uncertainties are not deterring new operators from trying to enter the market. Earlier this year, the International Air Transport Assn. revised upward its 2005 loss estimate for the industry to $7.4 billion because of high fuel costs. Now it's likely that losses for 2006 will reach a similar level, according to Tom Murphy, IATA's senior vice president for financial services. In fact, he worries that fuel costs are "going to suppress demand" and pose another threat to airlines.
