The traveling public is increasingly wondering whether "facilitation" will ever make a comeback as the ultimate goal of the airline industry. Back in the day, this buzzword was bandied about by industry leaders as a facile way of indicating that the passenger was everyone's Number One Priority. And yet, passengers wait, and wait, and wait. Despite formidable technological advances, today, air travel on the European route system is no faster than it was 50 years ago. Nearly 20% of departures are delayed by more than 15 min. and no improvement is in sight for the short term. Although aircraft technical failures are now rare, a lagging air traffic management (ATM) is permanently disrupting operations.
