摘要

With average passenger growth exceeding 6%, Asian carriers have reason to be optimistic as they look ahead to 2006. But old constraints-especially the region's resistance to liberalization-remain as big a worry as high fuel prices. "Bilateral systems are still shackling the industry," lamented Andrew Herdman, director general of the Assn. of Asia-Pacific Airlines (AAPA), which recently held its 49th year-end presidents' meeting here. Full liberalization-open skies-of air services between and within the European Union and the U.S.-the so-called Open Aviation Area that's gained momentum in recent weeks-is bound to have a ripple effect here in Asia.
