On his way out the door, President Barack Obama set in motion a flurry of multibillion-dollar weapons systems. The Air Force issued bid requests for military pilot training aircraft, otherwise known as the T-X, and an E-8C Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (J-Stars) replacement effort-contracts worth more than $23 billion. The Pentagon pushed forward its massive effort to modernize its nuclear arsenal, as the Defense Department's acquisition chief allowed its $125 billion Ohio-class submarine replacement program to move into an engineering design and development phase. And that decision follows solicitations issued in July for a next-generation nuclear ICBM and a long-range, nuclear-capable cruise missile.
