The German air force's Panavia Tornado replacement, the Command Fighter Advanced (CFX), could someday take control of fleets of unmanned strike and reconnaissance aircraft. The Luftwaffe's recently revealed road map for aerial warfare in the 2030s seems to align with the U.S. Air Force's own plans, employing fifth-generation aircraft such as the Lockheed Martin F-35 and F-22 as the highly survivable quarterbacks of a mesh network of manned and unmanned warplanes. Germany is now considering the F-35 Lightning II for this role.
