The U.S. Air Force still has not convinced itself that replacing the Northrop Grumman E-8C Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (J-Stars) with another vulnerable aircraft platform is worthwhile. But that has not stopped it from selecting the airborne radar to succeed the 24-ft., side-looking APY-7 phased-array antenna under the $6.9 billion J-Stars Recapitalization program. In late November, industry officials confirmed to Aviation Week that the Air Force has picked Northrop Grumman's active, electronically scanned array radar over Raytheon's alternative, branded Archimedes.
