Canada's new government, which took office in November after winning an unexpected outright majority in Parliament, faces complex and urgent defense decisions. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party firmly pledged before the election to reopen the competition for a new fighter aircraft, to be its largest defense project to date. The previous government had spent five years trying to secure a sole-source, noncompetitive procurement of 65 Lockheed Martin F-35A Joint Strike Fighters (JSF) to replace the air force's CF-18A/B Hornets.
