The loss of 13 lives in an offshore helicopter accident in Norway in April was another bitter blow to an industry that has been trying to turn its reputation around. Despite the global slump in oil prices that has reduced demand for helicopters servicing oil and gas platforms, and even prompted one operator-CHC Helicopter-to seek Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to attempt a restructuring, the operators, the helicopter manufacturers and their clients-the energy companies-are harmonizing their efforts, collectively sharing data and information and promoting best practices in procedures and operations in a bid to improve offshore safety.
