The day is fast approaching when researchers will be able to fly an experiment to the top of the atmosphere or beyond on reusable commercial vehicles, recover their hardware, and fly it again quickly at relatively low cost. A couple of researchers already have done the first two parts. The realities of human spaceflight will keep scientists and engineers who need suborbital platforms for their research on the ground for a while longer, however, waiting for their automated equipment to return to Earth instead of flying along with it, according to participants here for the fifth Next-generation Suborbital Researchers Conference (NSRC). That marks a change from the original hope for suborbital scientific research, as human-tended experiments and space tourism alike await the delayed advent of regular commercial human spaceflight.
