With Boeing starting assembly of the first 787-10, the final member of the 787 family, General Electric is studying a "next-gen" upgrade for the aircraft's GEnx-1B engine that will leverage technology under test for the much larger GE9X in development for the 777X. The potential upgrade, if approved, is aimed primarily at reducing maintenance costs and improving reliability rather than targeting fuel consumption. The package will be introduced as a block change to form a new build standard, although content and timing of the improvement plan have yet to be determined. The upgrade will not occur, however, before the completion of FAA Part 33 certification of the GE9X, scheduled for 2018.
