With last year's fatal MV-22B training accident a stark reminder of the dangers of prolonged hovering and power loss in a tiltrotor during brownout conditions, Bell-Boeing is seeking to accelerate introduction of a newly developed, engine-protecting, barrier-type air filtration system. Tests of a prototype engine inlet barrier filter (EIBF) on the company's Advanced Technology Tiltrotor (ATTR), a V-22 leased by Bell-Boeing from the U.S. Defense Department, have demonstrated marked improvements in engine performance retention. The production version of the system, which will replace the existing particle-separation device, will be evaluated in 2017 over a series of flight operations in adverse environments such as sand, dust and saltwater.
