With an order under its belt and the considerable clout of Emirati cash, Piaggio Aerospace has been able to push forward with flight tests for its Hammerhead unmanned reconnaissance aircraft. A development of its P.180 Avanti executive twin-turboprop, the first fully representative prototype P.1HH Hammer-Head made its first flight from Trapani air base, Sicily, on Dec. 22, but the manufacturer-now 98% owned by United Arab Emirates' (UAE's) Mubadala Development Co.-kept the milestone under wraps until the IDEX defense showcase here, where the project was initially disclosed two years ago. And now the Italian air force has affirmed its commitment to the system with an order for six aircraft and three ground control stations; deliveries are slated to start in early 2016.
