A favorite industry pastime is about to wind down. I'm talking about public bashing of Boeing CEO Jim McNerney, who will retire July 1. There is plenty of fodder for McNer-ney's critics. Labor relations are poor in the wake of bruising negotiations with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, growth of the non-union facility in Charleston, South Carolina, and an unfortunate remark about employee "cowering." The Boeing 787 continues to rack up losses; deferred production costs are an astounding $30 billion and will increase for at least another year. Boeing brought unprecedented pressure on its suppliers for pricing concessions through the ill-titled "Partnership for Success" program. Even its engineers are upset and feel underappreciated.
