As part of the ongoing fallout from Russian aggression in Ukraine, Russia and France have scrapped a deal for two Mistral-class helicopter gunships ordered by the Russian defense ministry in June 2011. The Kremlin announced Aug. 5 that the presidents of both countries made a joint decision to terminate the deal over the phone. "We do not intend to seek any penalties or fines," Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a televised call-in show. The French government agreed to reimburse Moscow for expenses paid under the contract, as well as to return the Russian equipment and materials already installed on the amphibious assault ships.
