Avionics companies and data providers are putting in place strategies, partners and acquisitions required to take advantage of a coming era of applications and services for airliners. Enabled by connected cockpits and broadband links, the era will feature efficiency and safety applications for the cockpit as well as cabin services that will give advertisers a direct link to connected passengers. Key competitors emerging include GoGo, which started with broadband connectivity to the cabin through an air-ground network and is now expanding to the cockpit; Honeywell, whieh is the provider of the onboard hardware and distribution of Inmarsat's Global Xpress network; Rockwell Collins, which acquired Arinc in 2013; and more recently, International Communications Group, which builds Iridium satellite communications terminals and routers for the air transport and business aviation sector. Avionics provider Thales, which purchased LiveTV last year, plans to use Global Xpress to open up new applications for the cabin as well as the cockpit and air traffic management system.
