摘要

NASA's changing approach to reaching low Earth orbit (LEO) is driving changes to the unique facilities it built on Florida's "Space Coast" over the past 50 years, as historic buildings and launch pads are recycled for a new generation of private-sector launch vehicles. Blue Origin, the secretive launch-services startup bankrolled by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, will spend $220 million on infrastructure at Cape Canaveral to build, test and launch a powerful new methane-fueled rocket it has been developing at its Seattle headquarters. And Boeing has remodeled processing facilities near the massive Vehicle Assembly Building, originally built to stack Apollo Moon missions for its planned CST-100 "Starliner" commercial crew vehicle and the X-37 Orbital Test Vehicle it flies on classified missions for the U.S. Air Force.
