NASA researchers are studying a novel deep-space propulsion concept in which a spacecraft would "hitchhike" between small bodies in the outer Solar System using a retractable tether and harpoon. The "Comet Hitchhiker" is targeted at exploration of some of the vast number of comets, asteroids and bodies such as Kuiper belt objects and centaurs, which are of scientific interest but difficult to visit with current chemical or solar electric propulsion (SEP). By deploying a harpoon and tether, and then retracting the assembly, researchers say it could be possible to perform a slingshot maneuver, allowing the craft to rendezvous with multiple targets.
