Air China and Hainan Airlines are deepening their encroachment into the Shanghai home of rival China Eastern Airlines amid widespread expectations of industry consolidation that would probably include China Southern Airlines. Air China proposes to connect Shanghai with Manchester, England, and Barcelona, Spain, while Hainan Airlines wants to fly from the city, China's largest, to Brussels. Rival airlines have not yet presented much of a threat to China Eastern's profitable transpacific business, however. China Southern, Air China and China Eastern, all controlled by the national government, are supposed to fly intercontinental services mainly from their home cities. But in the past few years Air China, China Southern and privately owned Hainan have sought part of the Shanghai market, while China Eastern and China Southern have built up in Beijing. China Eastern has been vulnerable because in recent years it has been the slowest among China's three big state airlines to develop intercontinental services and because highly developed Shanghai is an unusually tempting market for its rivals.
