The post-Sputnik days when space exploration inspired a generation of students to study science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are over. In the competition for "the best and the brightest," Orbital's Northern Virginia operation loses some to Pentagon-focused "viewgraph manufacturers" who pay more and offer 9-5 hours, says Orbital Sciences Corp. executive Antonio Elias. But that doesn't mean space has lost its STEM allure. "What's amazing is how many come back in about a year, 18 months, because they suffer from what I call hardware withdrawal symptoms," Elias says.
