摘要

Switzerland has defended its neutrality for decades, but now its people have decided that their country-one of the richest in the world-cannot afford to spend money on a new fighter. Nearly 2.9 million Swiss voters went to the polls on May 18 to vote-again-whether to back or drop plans to fund the introduction of the next-generation JAS 39E Gripen to replace Switzerland's aging fleet of F-5E Tigers. But 53.4% voted against the move, putting an end to any chance for the Gripen to wear the country's white cross, and throwing air defense plans into disarray. The referendum was prompted after critics of the project managed to gather the 50,000 signatures needed to stage a new vote on whether to cancel the recently passed law. Polling by leading newspapers before the referendum indicated that a small majority were against the purchase, despite government officials warning of the impact of a no-vote on national security.
