Flutter is the most dreaded word in the aerodynamicists' lexicon, but a team of flight-test engineers are poised to fly an experimental aircraft that is designed to help tame this dangerous phenomenon. The rewards, if they are successful, could be huge. From aviation's earliest days, designers have coped with flutter by adding margin to the aircraft structure. While this approach stiffens the airframe and prevents potentially catastrophic coupling with aerodynamic forces, it also adds weight and necessarily limits the configuration and efficiency of the design. The Lockheed Martin Skunk Works-built X-56A will be flown in coming months as part of efforts to show that this flutter barrier can be overcome, opening up previously unexplored design space for future aircraft with lighter, more efficient high-aspect-ratio wings. Dubbed the Multi-Utility Technology Testbed (MUTT), the 28-ft.-span unmanned aircraft is designed to represent such a future vehicle; it incorporates long wings that on current aircraft would be considered impossibly slender and flexible.
