Pratt & Whitney's ambitious plan to re-enter the mainstream commercial engine market with the geared turbofan is facing its sternest test yet as Airbus readies the first PW1100G-powered A320neo for flight, and Bombardier prepares to resume CSeries testing after the recent PW1500G failure. As the Farnborough show approached, Pratt remained unwilling to discuss details of the PW1500G event, which involved the uncontained release of parts of the low-pressure (LP) turbine from the No. 1 engine on FTV-1, the first CSeries CS100 test aircraft. The incident occurred as the aircraft was conducting ground runs at Mirabel, Quebec, on May 29.
