Lockheed Martin and Pentagon officials have carefully planned their talking points at this week's Farnborough air show to focus on the F-35's reliability. Thus far, that indeed has been the focus-but with a far different spin than anticipated. The F-35B's international debut in the U.K. was bedeviled by the Pentagon's July 3 grounding of the fleet after the June 23 F-35A engine fire described by U.S. Navy officials as "catastrophic." The investigation into the incident is centered on the third-stage turbine in Pratt & Whitney's F135 engine. F-35 Program Executive Officer USAF Lt. Gen. Christopher Bogdan, however, is pushing ahead with a two-pronged strategy to reduce the price of producing and owning the single-engine fighter in the long term.
