摘要

In 1911, just eight years after the Wright brothers' first flight, a precocious Pole named Felix Pawlowski arrived in the U.S. with a dream of becoming an aeronautical engineer. His efforts to obtain work at the Wrights' factory in Dayton, Ohio, were unsuccessful, so he applied for a post as a professor of aeronautical engineering. He wrote to 18 colleges and universities; most did not bother to reply. Only the University of Michigan offered him a job, and in 1914 the discipline of aeronautical engineering was born in the U.S. Later that year, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) followed and offered a class in aeronautics. Just 15 years later, the legendary Clarence "Kelly" Johnson would enroll at Ann Arbor.
