Bolstered by recent new product introductions and buoyant sales of its turboshaft engines, Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) says plans for a next-generation PT6 family replacement will not be firmed up until at least 2014. The manufacturer is committed to the goal of developing a new turbine targeted at a step-change improvement in fuel burn of around 20%. But Sales and Marketing Senior Vice President Maria Delia Posta says, "we are still one year away or so from firming it up." Concept studies have progressed, she notes, acknowledging that they "have not fully solidified around any one architecture. We're still looking at a range." Studies of a PT6 family successor in the 2,000-shp range and below were stepped up in response to operator concern amid rising fuel prices in 2010-11. The company laid out a strategy to select an architecture that would both satisfy the advanced technology requirements of airf ramers as well as make it suitable for retrofitting. "We need to set those kind of objectives to drive a game-changing architecture. So that's still the target. We're getting closer to being able to confirm those numbers, and we have them in sight, but it's going to be about a year or so before we are in a position to talk about it," Delia Posta says.
