Fly-by-wire system provider Parker Aerospace says it has made project management improvements in the wake of a one-year delay for the Embraer Legacy 500 program, but maintains that the schedule slip was caused by factors beyond its control. Embraer in October 2011 surprised the industry when it announced a one-year slip in the Legacy 450 and 500 programs, blaming the delay on its fly-by-wire (FBW) prime contractor, Parker Aerospace, for failing to earn a software approval for its remote electric units due to improper documentation. Remote electronics units (REUs) convert commands from the flight computer into control-surface deflections via hydraulic actuators. Embraer had planned a first flight for the Legacy 500, the first of the two jets to be built, by the end of 2011.
