With a U.K. commitment to increase its European Space Agency contribution 25%, the space industry is becoming a major economic driver in Britain. The nation's £1.2 billion ($1.8 billion) pledge to ESA programs is part of a larger €10-bil-lion ($13 billion) spending package the agency approved last November, making the U.K. the agency's third-largest funder-after France and Germany-and positioning Astrium U.K. to reap the benefits. The U.K. Space Agency estimates the nation's space industry is worth £9.1 billion, with more than £1 billion coming from manufacturing in a high-tech sector that is growing at the rate of 7% a year. "The message we're sending is that Britain is open for space business," says David Parker, the new chief executive of the U.K. Space Agency. Parker says the country has pledged €300 million a year, a 25% increase in annual public-sector expenditure in space over the next five years. He says the British government calculates that 95% of the sector's economic value-much of it based on satellite television broadcast to U.K. consumers-is not publicly funded. "We basically have a market-oriented approach to our space investment," he says.
