The Civil Air Navigation Services Organization (Canso) is coming of age as one of the senior aviation alphabet groups, as forays into new ventures help raise its profile and provide the resources needed to expand its role. The World ATM Congress, which debuted last month, was in many respects a milestone for Canso. This was its first major trade show as well as its highest-profile conference, where it gained further endorsements of its role from important aviation leaders. Canso also began marketing its first product for the ATM industry, a billing and yield-management system developed by Airways New Zealand. These moves echo some of the services that other major associations have been offering their members for years and will give the group more revenue to do the kinds of work it envisages. They reflect the fact that "Canso is maturing," says Neil Planzer, Boeing vice president for ATM and Canso executive committee member.
