Republicans, who control the U.S. House of Representatives, and other supporters of Taiwan here have mounted a fresh push to persuade the White House to allow sales of advanced fighters to the island. As of yet, the hawks and boosters have not been successful. But with security concerns mounting in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as a new Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) in Taiwan calling for significant investments in asymmetric and advanced technologies-including indigenous efforts for a fifth-generation fighter-a long-sought U.S. foreign military sale (PMS) of more advanced technology is looking more viable. And that is despite lingering concerns, shared across opposing White House administrations, about aggravating China, as well as uncertainties about Taiwan's intent and ability to improve its own defenses.
