The ability to deliver the first shot and then put distance between you and your adversary is a key survival tactic in beyondvisualrange air-to-air combat. In the ballet of an aerial engagement, shooting first and as early as possible allows the pilot to put distance between his aircraft and any missile fired by an opponent. While using stealth and firing longer-range missiles can increase the chances of a kill, the best defense from any incoming missile is distance. The decision about when to turn away is still a difficult one, even for th2e most experienced pilots, but new technology may help to take that decision out of their hands. At European missile manufacturer MBDA, engineers are testing a series of algorithms which aim to increase the effectiveness of future airtoair missiles by predicting the next set of maneuvers that will be carried out by the enemy aircraft.
