Within the next couple of months, the U.S. Navy/ Northrop Grumman X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System Demonstrator (UCAS-D) team plans to wind up the program by recovering one of the two air vehicles on an aircraft car-rier in a Navy test range area 100 mi. off the Virginia coast. In test flights May 14-17, the program made it close to that objective by performing a catapult launch from the carrier USS George Bush, followed by successful touch-and-go landings. Program officials had hoped to conduct arrested landings during this at-sea period, but bad weather at the Navy's Patuxent River, Md., flight-test center prevented the completion of some trials-heavy-load arrestments and high-sink-rate landings-that were needed to earn formal Navy approval to make an arrested landing at sea. These tests should be finished this month and a carrier should be available in July-August.
