Eight years ago, Southeast Asian-based airlines had just 29 turboprop airliners in the 70-seat class. Since then the fleet has more than tripled to 106, with ongoing orders making the region one of the most important for the turboprop sector. More remarkably, this growth has happened, and is continuing, amid powerful expansion by budget airlines, the classic enemy of the turbo-prop operator. There is little sign that the Southeast Asian turboprop boom is slowing. Indonesian carriers are awaiting delivery of 60 ATR 72s, the type that has benefited most from the sudden blooming of what was once a barren market. Malaysian carriers have 22 of the type on order and look likely to take up options on 16. Unfilled orders for those two countries alone account for a year of ATR's rapidly accelerating production.
