As Boeing begins work on preliminary design drawings for the 737 MAX ahead of starting detailed design in early 2014, project leaders hint that the recently announced fuel performance improvement over the current 737 variants could be extended further. "We are confident we are better than 14%," says Boeing 737 MAX vice president and general manager, Keith Leverkuhn. The potential for additional performance margin emerges principally from strict control over the aircraft's weight but could also come from other improvement areas, including finalized data from flight tests of the 737 MAX's CFM Leap-IB engine in 2015.
