Europe's three largest airlines are facing the new year with double-barreled woes. Overall, they must contend with the very shaky economic conditions of most of the region. And specifically in the industry, they must deal with a significant force realignment that includes Etihad Airways becoming Air Berlin's major shareholder and International Airlines Group (IAG) controlling BML Etihad's move, completed in late December, has Air France-KLM and Lufthansa seriously worried. This concern partly stems from the direct implications of having a major local competitor being propped up financially, but it extends to fears of more acquisitions that may be looming.
