Safety in numbers could be the catchphrase of the aviation industry as it pursues alternative fuels. The more feedstock-to-fuel pathways that are developed and commercialized, the more chances aviation has of securing lower-emission jet fuels at prices competitive with petroleum. But converting technical progress into commercial success is proving a challenge. Efforts to scale up production of biofuels from plants such as camelina and jatropha are moving slowly, because of the costs and time involved, so attention is shifting to new fuel pathways that widen the range of feedstocks available.
