The crash of an Air France Airbus A330 on June 1,2009, was a major shock. But with French accident investigation agency BEA's final report released, valuable lessons can be learned, provided that conflicts between the parties involved can be overcome. En route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Air France 447 encountered a zone of heavy weather as it entered the inter-tropical convergence zone. At the start of a sequence of events, it is believed that the aircraft's pitot tubes iced over in bad weather, rendering speed indications unreliable. The two co-pilots had to deal with the situation as the captain took his scheduled rest break. The autopilot disconnected as a result of the unreliable speed data, so that the aircraft had to be flown manually.
