For Sally Ride, who died July 29 of pancreatic cancer, being the first U.S. woman in space was only the beginning of a long and productive career applying her experience to spaceflight safety, education and U.S. space policy. On her historic first mission-STS-7 in June 1983-Ride pioneered use of the Canadian-built shuttle robotic arm to deploy and retrieve free-flying satellites. On her second-like the first aboard the space shuttle Challenger-she helped test satellite refueling techniques.
