Strong commercial aircraft orders in 2010 are a sign the industry is beginning its recovery from the global economic downturn. As a result, Forecast International expects engine production to increase starting in 2011. Large backlogs were maintained through the downturn, putting original equipment manufacturers in a good position for the turn-around. At the same time engine companies have continued to develop technology aimed at increasing fuel efficiency while lowering noise and emissions. General Electric remains the production leader in the turbofan segment, with its large engines available on essentially all widebody transports and exclusive on a few. The GEnx accounts for almost 60% of the Boeing 787 engine market and, like Rolls-Royce whose Trent 1000 is also available on the 787, has capitalized on delays to incorporate enhancements into the engine's final build. GE's second GEnx application is the 747-8, now in flight testing and for which it is the only engine available.
