Business opportunities for Western avionics manufacturers are expanding as new players enter the civil aircraft market and need the capabilities and technologies-as well as the reputations-of established suppliers to make their products competitive globally. As companies supplying systems for Chinese and Russian aircraft programs risk creating competitors in the long run, continued investment in new technologies and capabilities to stay ahead of the field is taking on increased importance. China's Comac is drawing heavily on Western systems experience in an effort to ensure its 170-190-seat C919 is competitive with narrowbody airliners from Airbus and Boeing. GE Aviation Systems, in a joint venture with China's Avic Systems, is supplying the avionics core processing, flight-deck display, onboard maintenance and flight recording systems, and will support Comac avionics integration.
