Demand for satellite services remains strong, despite the global economic upheaval, especially in developing markets such as Eastern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. In the near future, broadband Internet and direct television broadcasting will be primary areas of growth in the satellite market. Militaries around the world, seeking to improve connectivity between units and individual soldiers, are also an important source of growth in the communications satellite market. Broadband Internet has changed the way society communicates and business operates. Recognizing this, many governments have begun pushing broadband to more of the population, with terrestrial land line services being the primary beneficiaries. Cable and fiber-optic lines are stretching to new areas, but in many places, such as rural regions, it is too expensive to lay miles of cable to reach everyone. It is in these areas that satellites can help bridge the gap in broadband coverage-Ka-band satellites are lowering the cost of delivering high-speed Internet access to households and businesses.
