General Electric is counting on a joint venture with Avic in Shanghai to propel the company into the front ranks of avionics suppliers, just as its 50-50 partnership with France's Snecma turned CFM International into a powerhouse engine maker. With Chinese President Hu Jintao and U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke looking on, GE Aviation President/ CEO David Joyce and Avic Senior Vice President Zhang Xinguo were scheduled to sign the agreement forming the joint venture in Chicago on Jan. 21. The event was timed as part of Hu's state visit to the U.S. that included his summit with President Barack Obama.
