Globalization, new technologies, fierce competition, winners and losers, beginnings and endings. There will be no shortage of interesting developments in the aerospace and defense industry this year. Here are 11 to keep an eye on. Tanker award The tortured saga of the $35-billion KC-X tanker refueling competition may finally come to an end in February, when the U.S. Air Force hopes to announce a winner from bids submitted by Boeing and EADS North America. Boeing was awarded the contract in 2004, but it was revoked amid corruption charges that sent the company's chief financial officer to jail. Four years later, a Northrop Grumman-EADS team pulled off a stunning upset by winning the job, only to see it snatched away when the Government Accountability Office upheld a protest by Boeing. The Air Force moved to re-compete the contract, but Northrop dropped out in 2010, citing what it said was a bias in the Pentagon's weighting criteria that favored Boeing's smaller aircraft. EADS then opted to go it alone. Can the European defense giant pull off another upset? And will the inadvertent release of data from the two companies' bids upset the Air Force's efforts to avoid another protest? Given this program's history, almost nothing would come as a surprise.
