Lufthansa's recently retired chairman and CEO is a thoughtful engineer who passionately advocates harnessing technology to drive efficiencies, and he wants to see next-gen aircraft employed in an optimal way. Compare next-gen aircraft to birds: "If birds get resistance, they slow down, and if they have a tailwind, they fly faster," said Mayrhuber at Aviation Week's MRO Americas Conference April 12. Airline aircraft tend to fly at the same speed during cruise, which burns more fuel.
