摘要

The prime contractor for space shuttle operations, United Space Alliance, is positioning itself for survival in the uncertain post-space shuttle era, even as it embarks upon the grim task of cutting its workforce in half. "We've known the shuttle program was going to be ending for some time and we've been planning and working for an orderly transition for over two years now," says United Space Alliance (USA) Chief Operating Officer Daniel Brandenstein, a four-time shuttle astronaut. "The goal that we've been working toward is to retain the critical skills that we have in our organization, so that when the next program is better denned and moves into reality we will have not have lost all those skills. We've had a very broad and very deep company, and as we've been downsizing we're working to retain the width, but we're shaving off the depth."
