General Electric hopes better-than-predicted test performance of the upgraded engine for the Boeing 787 on its flying testbed will result in meeting—or exceeding—initial fuel-burn goals when flights on the twinjet begin, possibly by early July. The true benefit of the first performance improvement package (PIP) upgrade will be measured during nautical air miles (NAMS) tests planned for August, says GEnx product line Vice President and General Manager Bill Fitzgerald. "The NAMS engines have begun assembly in our Durham, N.C., facility, and maybe will do better than what's been reported so far," he asserts.
