Kazakhstan is perceived as being backward, but the reality of this diverse country that is strategically located between Russia and China is quite different, and flag carrier Air Astana has been tasked with helping convey that to the rest of the world. The country's commercial capital, Almaty, is surrounded by lush deciduous forest and snow-capped mountains, making the small city look more like a large town in Western Europe. The political capital, Astana, in the north, is new and has an eclectic mix of modern office towers and public buildings, many of which were designed by acclaimed U.K. architect Norman Foster. Between Almaty and Astana are steppes, vast stretches of flat and semi-arid land.
