The Royal Australian Air Force is the first recipient of an Airbus A330 Multirole Tanker Transport (MRTT). Airbus Military on June 1 formally handed over the first of five KC-30As to the Australian government at the tanker's home base at RAAF Amberley. Three more KC-30AS are to be delivered this year, including the first KC-30A to be built, which was involved in an inflight refueling accident with a Portuguese F-16. Airbus Military says the maneuver sparked some modifications to the man-machine interface to help alert operators when contact is made, but did not trigger any hardware or software changes to the core refueling system. The fifth Australian tanker is due for delivery next year; it recently was flown to Qantas Defense Services for conversion.
