A massive narrowbody order by Qantas is destined to shake up the Asia-Pacific airline industry, even though none of these aircraft will operate under the famous flying kangaroo brand. The acquisition of 110 Airbus A320s— the largest-ever order by an Australian carrier—will help the Qantas group's push into lucrative Asian markets. The airplanes will be divided between the Jetstar low-cost subsidiary, a new joint venture low-cost carrier (LCC) in Japan, and a proposed premium startup in a yet-to-be-named Asian city. In contrast, Qantas is pulling back mainline international services and deferring Airbus A380 orders.
