Should Airbus further boost the combined production rates of the single-aisle A320 series well beyond the currently planned 42 aircraft per month? The European manufacturer has to address this key question soon if it intends to handle the steady stream of sales that temporarily left Boeing's far behind. But it is a complex question that is slowly evolving into a matter of taking calculated risks. In the last nine months, Airbus secured orders and commitments covering as many as 1,200 A320NEOs (new engine option), more contracts are in sight and everyone at Airbus suddenly seems to believe the sky is the limit. But to say the least, this assessment is mistaken.
